Why its unusual: Given the time period, this was  quite the unconventional love song. The internet didnt become a household commodity until the early 90s when the first commercial internet service providers (e.g. AOL) came about. The band, also known as Zapp, was certainly ahead of its time,  credited  for the inspiration behind the early 90s G-funk sound of hop hop. Finding love through the internet  must have seemed like a strange, distant concept when this song was released. Why its unusual: A catchy melody cant mask the lyrics of this unusual love song. While many love songs attempt to make the love interest sound appealing in terms of personality or temperament, this one makes no attempt whatsoever. The singer goes on and on about the nose, eyes, and lips of a woman he finds beautiful. By the off-chance a woman DOES finds these lyrics appealing, well be sure to take this off of the unusual list. You and your pussycat nose! 4) She Will Be Loved by Maroon 5  (2002) Overview: A man sings about his  obsession with making a sad girl happy. Why its unusual: The singer drives miles and miles to wait outside the house of an insecure, vulnerable 18-year-old woman. Regardless of how the woman feels, the singer says he wouldnt mind  standing on her street corner in the pouring rain, waiting for her to approach him. Even though the sentiment of sweetness is there,  the imagery of a street stalker sours this unusual  love songs mood  a bit. Example lyrics: I know where you hide Alone in your car Know all of the things that make you who you are I know that goodbye means nothing at all 5) Ben by Michael Jackson (1972) Overview: A boy sings about his new friendship and how it makes him feel. Why its unusual: Its not a traditional love song, but it  exhibits many qualities of one; loneliness, insecurity, and understanding. What makes this love song unusual is the fact that its about a boy professing his admiration for his pet rat. It was originally written for a movie about a rat named Ben, but it eventually sold itself as a single, even ranking #20 on the Billboard Top 100 during its release. While its still a nice song about a childs  love for a pet, its not as deep as a traditional love song  would usually permit. Example lyrics: Ben, the two of us need look no more We both found what we were looking for With a friend to call my own Ill never be alone And you my friend will see Youve got a friend in me 6) Mirrors by Justin Timblerlake (2013) Overview: The singer professes his love for someone because they remind him of himself. Why its unusual: While couples usually thrive because they share common interests, the singer  here thrives off of dating a carbon copy of himself. Its nice to admire the qualities of a person who  you think reflects your own traits, but calling them a mirror  voids them of any individuality. Play this song for someone you love when  youre feeling especially narcissistic. Example lyrics: I cant ever change without you You reflect me, I love that about you And if I could, I Would look at us all the time 7) Sweet Tangerine by The Hush Sound (2006) Overview: A desperate ex-boyfriend pleads for his girlfriend to come back to him. Why its unusual: Upon first listen, you  may be too distracted by the upbeat nature of the song to  really listen to the lyrics. The lyrics start with the singer trapped outside, freezing in the rain, hoping to be let inside by his ex-girlfriend. He made a mistake in their past relationship and tries to justify it by saying, Without the sour, the sweet wouldnt taste as In just a couple verses later, the song  quickly turns into the tale of a desperate stalker breaking into his  exs house and  waiting under her bed until she wakes up. If you choose to ignore  the lyrics about the ghost, you can get away with singing this to  someone you love! Why its unusual: No matter how many compliments you give someone on their physical appearance, it wont change their internalized insecurities. The singers in this song seem to think otherwise, noting that what makes the girl beautiful is the fact that she doesnt know shes beautiful. Its a concept that makes sense if you dont think about it much. Example lyrics: If only you saw what I can see Youll understand why I want you so desperately Right now Im looking at you and I cant believe You dont know, you dont know youre beautiful Thats what makes you beautiful BONUS: Every Breath You Take by The Police (1983) Overview: A singer  vows to look after his love interest in an obsessive way. Why its unusual: If you listen to this song once, itll become immediately apparent that the singer is actually a stalker.  No matter what the love interest does in their everyday life, the singer wants to watch them do it.  Even Sting, the lead singer of The Police, said that the song was deliberately about a stalker.  Its certainly not the greatest song to sing at a wedding. Toolkit Launched to Help Fight Meningococcal Disease on College Campuses Photo Credit: Pixabay Meningococcal disease is a serious bacterial infection that usually leads to extreme swelling of the tissues surrounding the brain and spinal cord (meningitis) or infection of the bloodstream (meningococcemia). Even with antibiotic treatment, 10 to 15 out of 100 people infected with meningococcal disease will die; about 11 to 19 out of every 100 survivors will have long-term disabilities, such as loss of limb(s), deafness, nervous system problems, or brain damage. The toolkit that was launched offers many materials that may aid student organizations in advocating for campus vaccine policies as well as educational information to help fellow students learn about meningococcal disease and how to prevent it. It also contains materials like fliers, a poster, an FAQ, and sample petition that can be used by college students to educate their peers and help advocate for change and better campus health policies to combat meningococcal disease from occurring in the student population. The outbreaks that occurred recently at U.S. colleges include the University of Wisconsin Madison, Santa Clara University, and Rutgers University. The fact that there have been such outbreaks demonstrates how imperative it is to vaccinate against this disease. Most recent cases of meningococcal disease on college campuses, including the ones at the above universities, primarily involve cases of serogroup B disease, and the toolkit stresses that students should obtain both the MenACWY and the MenB vaccines in order to be fully protected. As part of their campaign, NMA included the stories of two advocates: Kolton Kreston, who survived serogroup B disease when he was a junior in college, and Claudette Lewis, who lost her daughter Cherice to the disease when she was a sophomore. “Fighting meningitis was the biggest obstacle I ever faced. The pain was so intense at times I didn’t want to live. I urge every student to learn more about meningitis and get both vaccines,” said Kolton, who now coaches wrestling at Northwestern College in Iowa. Besides the stories of Kreston and Lewis, the toolkit also includes a video with more advocate stories and urges young adults and adolescents to talk to their doctors about both types of vaccines against meningococcal disease. Two vaccines, MenACWY and the MenB vaccines, offer protection against all five of the major strains of the disease: A, C, W, Y and B. This is an interesting major and is very tough when trying to be anything other than a therapist. You can be a school counselor, clinical counselor, go into advertising, and also go into social services. The 8th major on the list is Nursing. This is known as the largest force in health care. This is obvious the career path you would go into with this major. Go into being a registered nurse because that’s where you’ll make more money salary wise. The 7th most common major is Marketing. The most careers that follow this major are public relations, sales, and advertising. Other jobs that could come from marketing are general management and fashion even. Marketing is a very versatile degree to major in. The 6th major on my list is Elementary Education. This is always a great major due to the lack of people willing to be teachers in today’s economic hardships. I also find this to be the most rewarding job not monetarily but in the fact that you get to teach the generations to come; you help shape America. The 5th most shared major is Criminal Justice. You can do so much with this degree other than becoming a police officer. You can be a lawyer, work for the FBI, a counselor, legal assistant, and even a teacher if you would like. This is a very versatile degree. The 4th major that most students are in is Computer Science. This major may seem like you are only proficient in one category but you can be surprised at all the tasks you can do after completing this degree. The careers you can go into are game development, technical consultant, and even a computer engineer. There are plenty of careers that go along with this major. The 3rd major on the list is Communications. This seems to be a very popular major amongst my friends. This degree would help land a job in a news station as a reporter or even as an anchor. You can also practice law, public relations, advertising, marketing, journalism, become an editor’s assistant, and even human resources. This is another major where you aren’t just stuck doing one thing for the rest of your life if you do not like it. The 2nd most common major on the list is Business Administration. This is definitely the most common amongst my friends. I believe this is the ultimate major for being the number one most versatile. You can get a job almost doing anything with a business degree. You can be a manager, an accountant, public relations, marketing, entrepreneur, and even a fashion merchandising technician. This is a highly recommended major for any exploratory students out there. Now for the first most shared major in the nation, Biology. This is the typical degree for all those doctors out there, but surprisingly, you can do more with it. You can go into healthcare, research, education, and you can go into government work. So if you ever decide you do not want to be in your major and it’s too late to switch out, without becoming a fifth year senior, think of all the other career opportunities you can have with your degree. It can sometimes even be surprising when you have a degree and go into a completely different field. It’s possible so never give up!
